Ayr Rugby Football Club

Head coach Peter Murchie has named his shortlist for your September Slaters Menswear Player of the Month, selecting new boys Marshall Sykes, Kyle Rowe and David Corbenici, alongside Ayr veteran Blair Macpherson.

It has been a scintillating start to life in the Tennents Premiership for Pete Murchie's men winning five-out-of-five and picking up all available bonus points. After a heroic 38-17 win on Saturday over Melrose they now sit on the top of the table, five points clear.

The month of September also saw Ayr retain the Bill McLaren Shield for the fourth consecutive time, etching themselves onto the trophy for a second time.

  • Blair Macpherson has epitomised the fearless approach Ayr have had to start the campaign. The back-rower has started all five contests and captained his side last weekend in the absence of Pete McCallum. The bruising ball carrier has also been unstoppable going forward, picking up five tries so far this season.

  • Since joining from Hawks in the summer Kyle Rowe has certainly won the plaudits of the Millbrae faithful. The wingers devastating strike-rate has earned him seven tries in just five games for the club. Although missing out on the score sheet on Saturday, his sublime leaping catch delivered the knock-out blow to Melrose, which Gregor Henry duly finished off.

  • Another new face around Millbrae, Marshall Sykes has put to bed any worry of a lacking engine room this season. With familiar faces such as Scott Sutherland and Rob McAlpine leaving in summer a question mark was put over the lock position but youngster Sykes has dispelled any doubt. He has started in all five fixtures so far this season and relentless work ethic has become a staple of a flourishing forward pack.

  • David Corbenici has also contributed in the engine room this season and his ability to switch to six in a flash makes him a valuable asset to the Ayr pack. Versatility is just one of many skills the 24-year-old possesses and his 'work horse' characteristic makes him a menace for all 80 minutes. Corbenici bagged himself two tries in September.
